I really lucked out. Just as I was finishing up with one job the Bluenose II (a gorgeous 181 foot Schooner in NS, Canada) was looking for people to replace some university students heading back to school. I applied not thinking I would even hear back. I got called for an interview and it was more of a job description. They asked if I had my stuff with me. I said “No I don’t normally travel with all my belongings…” So I joined the following morning at 8:30am. We sailed at 9am. They took my stuff threw me a crew tshirt and said haul on this line. I asked ” what does it do?” they said “I’ll tell you later.” I was hooked and I’ve been professionally sailing now since 2008!!

A really great way to get started on tall ships is, if you’re lucky enough to live by the water, volunteer during the off season with maintenance on weekends or get a job/ volunteer on one of the boats doing day sails near you during the  summer months. Tall Ships are a lot of work and need a ton of love. If you’re really keen on getting into it you can def find a ship willing to get you started.
